Buddy came in on Saturday 6th September 2014 at 9 months old, I took him straight out for a walk on his own, off lead chasing a ball, he was as good as gold. Came back for his lead on too. There were other dogs in the park he didn't even care just stayed focused on the ball which I am very pleased with. He did pull toward a few cars on the way back that drove past, so will need a little work on this.

He also chases cats, that's not surprising really. He is a little toy possessive when there are other dogs around but loves to play with other dogs and loves people and children. Buddy is right up my street. He is easy to control on a walk in a group or on his own. He sleeps downstairs at night with free roam of the house and doesn't make a sound or chew and is very clean. I have left him for an hour on his own each day to get him used to it and gradually can build this up over time.

This boy will be brilliant for agility, he is very fast and "springy." He can be a little shy when it comes to putting his lead on after a walk although I have only had him do it to me once in 4 days of lots of walks. As long as you can get him to sit close to you, you can get his lead on no problem. Buddy is very active and will be looking for a very active owner who will have the time to spend with him and give him everything he needs and deserves.

Buddy is such a good boy, a very fast learner. He has been doing some basic training with me to start with, so sit downs, lay downs, roll over, give paw, leave the food until I say he can have it...etc. He is so willing to learn and really is a super dog.

A few weeks on Buddy is doing great. He still pulls on the lead a fair bit but have had no trouble getting him on the lead as long as I have a treat for him. As I have said before he is a very active dog and wants a job to do. He will need at least two walks a day where he can run off the lead chasing a ball to really use up some of his energy. We even had him helping out with some gardening yesterday where he would carry some plant cuttings to a pile the other side of the garden. Was absolutely hilarious but he was demonstrating just how eager to work and please he is. To the right person this dog will be an absolute dream. I wish I could keep this one all to myself but with two of my own already and to carry on fostering dogs in need Buddy must find a home of his own.

Meet 5 month old Wizard on his journey to his new life - Homed

https://www.allweatherwalkies.com/the-rescue-dogs-blog/meet-wizard-on-his-journey-to-his-new-life

https://www.allweatherwalkies.com/the-rescue-dogs-blog/meet-wizard-on-his-journey-to-his-new-life#comments

Uncategorized

From wizard's mummy. Wizard has just got a new family! I'm so happy for him but also so sad to see him go. I love that little guy, it was hard not to cry all the way home but I some how managed to keep it together. Teaching him tricks and training him out of bad habbits, laughing at him falling over or off the sofa, its been a blast! Will miss you Wiz you crazy puppy! x

Wizard has joined us on the 14 July 2014 at just 4 months old. I picked him up from the rescue's kennels this afternoon after his journey from Cornwall. His owners split up and with two kids he was just too much for his single owner to cope with. He is a handful, very hyper and playful. He has a lovely recall and already has been off the lead running around introducing himself to every person and dog he meets. Everyone loves him and his cheeky personality.

He needs some house training but that could be down to the fact that he has only been here for one afternoon and well he is only a baby. He is a very fast learner though. He drinks loads, as in he will not leave the water bowl until it is empty, then will pee loads - again another possible reason for the house training that needs to be done. I am going to book him to the vets tomorrow to make sure he is healthy and there are no underlying issues.

Wizard has never been left and is not crate trained. Tonight will be his first night in the crate sleeping downstairs with just the other dogs and no people and I know he is going to be noisy but it's all part of his training.

He is a bit possessive over food and toys so this too will be part of his training. He is in the right place to learn what he needs to and with him being such a quick learner I have high hopes for this little chap.

Going to be a nice dog for the right person. A handful but wants to learn and wants to be doing something. Possible he might want to be a working dog. Will keep you posted

So glad I caught the video below, so funny, silly puppy Wizard!

Guess who just learned 4 tricks in 10 minutes, Wizard did! Now that's a new record of fast learner for me haha. So its been 1 week since Wizard came in and so far so good. He is so much better with his food now although still needs a little work with chew toys like raw hide bones etc. He does herd other dogs a fair bit, pulls on the lead and barks at people/other dogs. Not in an aggressive way what so ever, just that he wants to go play with them. I think he needs something to focus on to help this behavior but so far have been unsuccessful with trying to get him to chase a ball. Early days yet.

In just 1 week Wizard has been crate trained, sleeps quietly at night, can be left for half an hour - 45 minutes on his own during the day. He was such a good boy!

Update on 05/08/2014: The vet has agreed that Wizard can now be put up for adoption. Wizard has something called Panosteitis, which is something that affects his bone marrow that causes pain in all 4 legs while he is growing. It will not cause him any problem's when he is fully grown, so around 15-18 months. For the time being it is being managed using metacam once a day and not too much walking. It is quite common and there will be no reason why he can't live a full and normal life. I have even been told by Lynn at Doggy Paddle that one collie she had come in with it, was over it by 18 months and is now a great agility dog. It can make him have a slightly high temperature so he does drink a lot but is settling down now he has the metacam.

Other than that Wizard is a great little guy, 5 months old, loves other dogs, people and children. No cats. He does get very hyper around other dogs and children so may be better being the only dog in the house and/or older children but is happy with my two dogs and all the guests, just needs a time out occasionally.

He can be a little toy possessive but getting better each day. His food possessiveness is much better too now. I can happily put my hand in his bowl and take food from him with no trouble at all. I would still advice that he is supervised as well as continuing his training.

Wizard has a fantastic recall, loves it when you whistle at him and responds perfectly to his name. He will chase a ball when he is on his own, even bring it back, so with a little more training should be good at playing fetch. If he is with another dog he will just follow them every where instead of chasing a ball but hopefully this will stop with more training.

He sleeps with free roam of the house and doesn't make a peep. Fully house trained and crate trained. He is good being left at home on his own after a walk for up to two hours now, gradually increasing the time. Have had no issues what so ever in that department. He can sit, lay down, give paw, beg, wait and stay. Pulls on the lead at first but will walk nicely if you have a treat.

There will be an adoption fee for Wizard that goes straight to St Peters Vets

Buster - His journey to his new life - HOMED

https://www.allweatherwalkies.com/the-rescue-dogs-blog/buster-i-need-a-home-to-call-my-own

https://www.allweatherwalkies.com/the-rescue-dogs-blog/buster-i-need-a-home-to-call-my-own#comments

Uncategorized

Buster met his mum's friend's dog Gracie today, looks like they have had lots of fun running around together. I'm so pleased for him to have finally found his new mummy and a very loving home that he so deserves. Thank you Terri for taking him on, and Richard and Jodie for putting Terri in contact with me. I know he is going to be well and truly loved with Terri and I'm so happy for him. Will definitely be keeping in touch and I'm sure we can go out for a walk together one weekend soon x

What you need to know if you are considering taking Buster on:
He loves other dogs,

He loves people and children,

His recall is good although he will get distracted by other dogs/people in the park quite easily,

He does not like cats or small pets such as guinea pigs or rabbits,

He will steal food from the counter if no one is looking and will try to get on the sofa, again if he thinks no one is looking.

He will need TWO thirty minute walks EVERY day (one AM one PM)

Buster came into rescue on the 1st of March 2014 at 8 months old. He is a Lurcher Collie mix looking for a nice forever home. Buster is a very sweet natured boy, very gentle. He was handed over to us as his owner's three year old child wouldn't leave Buster alone. He is quite shy with other dogs but once he gets to know them he will play with them for hours. He loves people and obviously older children. Buster doesn't have a bad bone in his body I really love this guys temperament. He does have some basic manners to learn, not getting on the furniture for one being that he is quite a large dog. He also steals food so will be getting some training for that too. He hasn't ever been let off a lead on a walk but I'm sure he will be off enjoying life with the rest of the gang in no time

Update on day 2: Buster hasn't tried to get on the furniture at all since we started his training yesterday which we are very pleased with. He had his first walk off the lead (in tennis courts) and he came back every time I called him which I was very impressed with. He was running around with all the dogs trying to get them to play with him which again is a big step in the right direction. He has still been trying his luck to take food from me when I sit down to eat but definitely improving there.

Update on day 11: Buster no longer gets on the furniture which is great. He has improved massively when it comes to food stealing as he no longer tries to take it off my plate. He does however steal off the worktops. As soon as I catch him I will correct this behaviour but so far he is only doing it when I’m out. It’s not even food that he is taking off the sides, he likes material things such as tea towels. When Buster arrived he had several fleece blankets and he carries them everywhere suckling them. So when he stole the tea towel I was quite surprised to find he had shredded it as he hasn't shredded the blankets. I have now got him chewing on a kong so slowly I hope I can wean him off the blankets.
I would definitely say that Buster would prefer a home where he can be the only dog. While playing with him and my own dog, I noticed Buster got rather jealous when I made a fuss of my own dog. Tonight he put himself between me and my dog and proceeded to cock his leg over me...In disgust I told him off and I put him straight in the garden.

Update on day 17: Buster goes off lead and runs around happily and has a nice recall. He has lost some of that weight and is much fitter now. He does however chase other dogs that are running for a ball and will nip them on the butt if he gets close enough.Going to try a vibrating anti bark collar to solve this – really hoping it works as the citronella spray collar did not. Buster is still a very happy and loving fella and still makes me laugh with his clown like personality. He is going to make someone a lovely pet when he’s ready. The video below is of him playing with a couple of his new friends.

Update day 20: Buster has made fantastic progress. The vibrating no bark collar seems to have done the trick and he is much less vocal out on walks now. He is so friendly with other dogs and people I'm really proud of him. He no longer wants to carry a blanket around with him and would much rather have a toy. He now knows that stealing of the worktops is bad and never gets on the furniture. His recall has been very good, he loves running around with all the other dogs and he will run over to other dogs and people at the park and give them all a lovely, submissive greeting but will come back as soon as you call him. He really is a smashing boy, so gentle, loving and friendly.

Update day 31: Buster knows some basic commands now, sit, give paw and thanks to Rose doing some training with him he will even sit with sausage on his paws and not touch it until you say he can have it. He has also stopped destroying toys and is definitely much more relaxed. He is good with being left at home for a couple of hours when I have to go out, as far as I can see he just sleeps. I would say now that Buster has lived with my two dogs for the last 4 weeks he will be able to live with another dog. He will be looking for a home with no cats as he does chase them. Buster loves kids but giving the reason he came into rescue I would suggest that they be over 10 years of age and understand that he won't like being pulled around and jumped on. Buster will need constant training throughout his life as he is a very intelligent boy and will need a lot of mental stimulation as well as his physical work out of two 30 minute walks every day.

Buster at the beach on day 50. Digby was bought at 9 weeks old and was too much for his owners to cope with. He is lovely with other dogs and people and is a great character. He needs a fair bit of training as he gets very easily distracted so doesn't always come back when called, he would much rather go and play with all the other dogs. He also gets bored very quickly and likes to be doing something all the time so as normal with collies he will need a lot of mental stimulation as well as a lot of exercise. Oh and he barks when he wants attention too. So over the next few weeks I will be training him to prepare him for a new home. So far today he has been learning not to bark for attention which has gone very well, he did some training on his walks to pay attention to me but still has a lot of work to do. Not bad for his first day though he's a very smart chap

Update: 21/01/2014:
I'm pleased to say Digby is going to a new home on a trial basis on Sunday - He has to pass a cat test (Digby seems to be more scared of cats than anything, he didn't even seem bothered by the one he met earlier until it hissed at him). He also has to be accepted by their other dog Zach (who I walk everyday). They get on very well on walks but Zach is very dominant so may be different in his own home. Keeping everything crossed for him.

Update: 28/01/2014:
So far so good with Digby in his new home, he seem's to be more scared of the cat than anything. He look's nice and relaxed in the picture I was sent yesterday by his new owners.

Digby the cutie

Digby 4 months on (10/04/2014) wearing his bronze good citizen award! I had several dogs come up that needed rehoming which I did myself but with Marians support. Then one of my lovely customer's asked me that if a Border Collie Puppy came up could I let her know as she really wanted one. I let Marian know and knowing they don't come up too often didn't expect to hear anything for a while. To our surprise it wasn't long before I got a phone call from Marian, there's a 6 month old boy in the pound just being signed over to the rescue. I went with Marian to the pound and met this little puppy called Jet. He was such a handsome little boy, very thin as he had been a stray, a very lovely natured little chap. I sent his picture off to my customer Sue but with no doubt he was the right one for Sue I took him home with me. I kept him for a week and slowly introduced him to Sue's other dogs while walking them. We introduced him to his new family and Jet is now Ollie and one very happy and healthy young boy. This was the moment I realised how much I can do to help. How the doggy day care and all the walks can be so great for a young pup in need of a second chance.

So since November last year I have been fostering puppies for Valgray's Border Collie Rescue and well I love it to bits.

Ollie in my car, one very handsome young man
